I live in Tucson, Arizona and will now be careful where I travel, or chose to move. We seem safe from most disasters; with some drought in the future  If I lived along the coast of the NW USA I would move away ASAP. At any time in the future there will be a gigantic earthquake and tsunami that totally devastates the NW coastline, for many miles inland. Recovery will take months to years, if ever. This forecast is carefully documented in a recent article in the New Yorker (July 20, 2015) and Google “cascadia fault”

The Cascadia fault runs off the coast of the NW for 700 miles, and cited as the most dangerous fault in North America. It was only discovered  45 years ago because it has been silent for 315 years. The average period between  41 quakes in the past 10,000 years is 243.  Wikipedia estimates 300-600 a year interval.  FEMA has estimates of the extent of death and destruction – which the article describes in gory detail.  “Our operating assumption is that everything west of Interstate 5 will be toast.” The NW is totally unprepared for this eminent disaster. We don’t know yet the distribution of those 41 quakes over time, and it may be many years before the next one; or it may be tomorrow. Residents will have 5 minute waring!

The article is long, but very well written – but may be emotionally difficult for some to read.  The disaster statistics are at the end.  The history of major earthquakes is briefly outlined, including the 2011 quake & tsunami in Japan.  Why this is such a recent discovery is clearly explained. It appears most people living in the NW don’t want to know of this forecast. This will be a much greater disaster than any occurrence of activity on the San Andreas fault.

How do we relate our inaction with this threat and the climate change threats?

Both are certain forecasts, but no exact timing or destruction details. What migrations and demographic shifts will be required over this century to secure humans from such disasters? With capitalism’s unwillingness to research new antibiotics (because of insufficient profit), can we expect them to support what needs doing for human survival?  Neither corporations or governments are capable of taking on these challenges.

To add to your depression, consider the latest NASA-funded study about “irreversible collapse” and another study about food shortages.

It has been my impression that the MSM, when it has covered the effects of climate change, focuses on the loss of species, higher temps, sea level rises, more disasters (droughts, floods, fires) – and gives little attention to social, cultural, and societal changes. Human suffering is more attributed to civil wars and terrorism, with refuges. Food and water shortages may be indirect causes of social disturbance – and is forecast to be much worse.

There appears to be a slight shift among some of the planet’s elites to take a small step re climate change. I fear it will be too weak and mis-directed.

QUERY:  Might some of the elites/leaders be holding back on informing the whole population of our threats and challenges because they fear “uprisings” and “irrational behavior” they can’t control?

We won’t be laughing when Donald Trump is elected president or other power shifts occur across the globe. One context for our world is that of major chaos, already underway, with various pocket organizations competing in surfing the chaos. The water around the frog is already boiling. We (who live temporarily in seemingly stable situations) project desired “order” on our constructed realities.

It may not be only those in poverty who up-rise, and maybe not them mostly – a myth of the elite. The elite and their minions may go mad as their world crumbles.

It seem obvious to me that the human population needs much more than an AWAKENING. We need a systemic UPLIFTING of “MUCH”. Establishing  OLLO = Organizing-for-Learning=&=Learning-for-Organizing  may be a good place to start.
