In response to a Facebook Post by Flemming Funch.

I resonate with Flemming’s “in things happening just right in order to come together a particular way in the future“. It is consistent with my own speculations on FEEDPAST BOOTSTRAPPING  and TEMPORAL TEXTURE.  The following is a MIND DUMP on this issue.

My strong interest in “time” and “change” sparked in high school and has been a dominant theme all my 80 years of life. The physics dept at Yale refused to let me challenge Einstein’s “limiting velocity” for my PhD thesis. I proposed a “superluminary domain” with all entities moving  V>C. A few years later the tachyon was accepted, but has yet to be observed. Relativity Theory gave me a background in thinking on time and “relative observations” (e.g., A observes B observing A observing B – a feature of R.D. Laing’s theories of interpersonal relations).

  •     The essential complementarity of determinism and freedom is also linked to temporal concepts.
  •     I explored the literature on multi-dimensional “time”.
  •      Milne’s proposal that electromagnet and gravitation “times” were different scales – electromagnetic was linear infinite past to infinite future whereas gravitational time was exponential, having a zero point at the Big Bang.  An underground movement continues who support a physical universe based on electromagnetics and plasmas instead of gravitation, as is the established model. Attempts towards a unified theory runs aground on the assumption that EM will be absorbed into the G framework. “Unified” may have to retreat to “Complementarity”.
  •     Others have speculated on a network of interacting “processes”, each with their own “time” – where a universal time is only a human construct.

I “grok” that a very major shift in human conceptions of reality will come from new ideas about time and change.

I “resolved” the paradoxical consequence of acting on information sent back in time.  This is what led Einstein to propose the limiting velocity EDICT – to block further consideration of this paradox.  Nothing is weird if one doesn’t act on info from the future. If one acts on info from the future a “bubble” universe is created for “what might have happened had the action not been taken”, while the universe continues – but lacking evidence of the info from the future. History would show a high frequency of improbable events greater than expected. This could be an empirical test for “syntropy”.

Long ago I started a presentation at a physics conference with: “There are no “things” called space or time.” There are observed events and observed spatial and temporal relationships between them.  Space-Time Coordinates are a human created construct. Special Relativity seems strange when we start with a classically imagined space & time background, as did Einstein and then weird things happen when objects move near the speed of light. Milne’s version started with spatial & temporal relationships (and the condition that we learn of distant events via light which has the weird character of having the same speed for all observers). The relativistic coordinate system emerges “naturally”.

This very strange, counter-intuitive, characteristic of light, seems to be accepted without speculation.  Richard Feynmann, in his Nobel acceptance speech, speculated that physics could abandon the concept of moving light through space.  It could be substituted with delay relationships between events labeled “emission” and “absorption”.  Movement in space-time is so powerfully intuitive for humans, that we treat is as “objective”.

“Temporal Integration” is an accepted topic in science. {Control of behavior by the distribution of events in time. Behavior can be affected by events extended over some time, and recent events may weigh more heavily than those further in the past. The way in which the events combine to affect current behavior is called temporal integration. When events are so far removed in time that they no longer contribute they are said to be beyond the organism’s time horizon.}  An extension of this I call “holistic determination”: a specific pattern/configuration over a time-space interval can “cause” a specific event to occur as a specific space-time coordinate.

I have added to this the possibility that information (not matter or energy) can “leak” from  present-to-past. However, our metaphor of linear time blocks compehension. It is more that there is an interaction-over-time within a temporal-duration. Probably no “transfer of energy of matter, only information, in the linear model”.  Within this temporal interval, when a “present” is “aware of alternative potential futures” it can influence random processes in its “near” past to make one of the alternative futures more probable.

I don’t believe this in an action by human consciousness, but a characteristic of living systems; distinguishing them from non-living systems. This may have some implications as to “consciousness” in computers.  I have called this process FEEDPAST BOOTSTRAPING.  A few second interval in human mental processing may involve feedpast bootstrapping. On a larger scale, humankind may be feedpast bootstrapping from its primate substrate.

TEMPORAL TEXTURE remains a fuzzy emergent.  Think of cables within cables within cables of threads. There is a linear “forward” component, but there are loops back within each cable and between cables. I think of nested resonances.

All of this speculation requires caution as we struggle with the Mental-Material circular dichotomy.  I boot it up to a triad, adding information (Marks or Media) to make it a 3M reality.  I don’t expect we humans to resolve this in the near future.

My speculations were best expressed in a paper to the  International Society for the Systems Sciences, Asilomar, CA.  June 14-19, 1994: x
